The usual workaround is to draw a rectangle that surrounds the text you want to highlight, send it behind the text. Acutally, there is a highlighter tool in PowerPoint 2003, but it doesn't function quite the same way as Word 2003. To access the highlighter tool, you have to go to the SlideShow View and then scroll to the slide that has the text you want to highlight. Then you will have to either right click and then click on Pointer Options--->Highlighter or go to the bottom left screen and click on the Pen icon and then click on highlighter (the pen icon does not show until move onto the next slide). The highlighter tool will then act as a physical highlighter and you can now highlight text.
